Book Project

This past month we have taken a few minutes here and there to enjoy a story about Fall and/or Halloween.  Each student was permitted to select their favorite book and design an advertisement for it.

We brainstormed criteria for our project based on a learning standard and "I Can" statement.

Designs had to include the title of the book, the author's name, three illustrations, three details from the story, and a spark of creative effort.

We wrapped our work around a cereal box to give it a three-dimensional effect.

After a week of testing the class really used some creative ideas and cut loose with the crayons, glue, scissors, and pencils.

When these come home, please take a few minutes to discuss your child's favorite book with them.

Counting Money

Just last week we were counting money.  Plastic coins and pretend dollar bills flowed through our classroom.  A lifelong skill, counting money can be difficult initially for young minds.  But we persevered!

This is what a couple of students thought about our work.

Blayde - "I really like counting money because I like to skip count.  It is fun."

Chloe - "I like counting money because we get to take out the plastic coins and use them."

Story Nory

Last week our class had a lot of fun while investigating the fairy tale genre.  Our computer center involved the web site, Story Nory.  This site contains audio stories from the fairy tale genre and many others, including Greek Mythology.  Natasha is the narrator for many of the stories and she has a fun British accent, which adds to the intrigue of many of the tales.

This website is free and you can easily access it by clicking on the link above in red.  Story Nory also has a free podcast available on itunes.

Happy Reading

Our Favorite Things About This Week

This week we worked with money and have been counting coins from pennies up to half-dollars.  I liked using the play coins to count with.  We read, The Bremen Town Musicians, and I really liked the parts when the animals were singing.

I liked our fairytale computer center this week.  We listened to different fairy tales on the Story Nory web site.  You can choose the fairy tales you want to listen to.

Welcome!

Welcome to Learning Together in Elementary.  This space is designed for students to post their thoughts about activities that are happening in our classroom.  Posts will also include discussions about books, projects, and the general goings-on of a second grade classroom.  I hope you will check in with us often to see just what we are up to!
